A quiet, historic village sitting between Stirling and Callander, Doune is full of character and green spaces. With a rich tapestry of history to explore, this quaint village is a popular tourist spot while also offering a selection of shops, services and eateries for the residents who are lucky enough to call Doune ‘home’.

Places to Play

Doune offers lots of options for activities and hobbies from ballet and Scouting for the kids, to Zumba and art groups for the grown ups.

In the centre of the village, aside from its excellent play park, Moray Park features sports pitches including tennis courts and football pitches for sports lovers. Outdoor community gym equipment can also be found here for those wanting to maintain or improve their fitness – hopefully in the sunshine! The Rural Hall and the Bowling Club can be found nearby too so there are plenty of local options.

Slightly further afield, the McLaren Leisure Centre in nearby Callander provides swimming and soft play as well as a wide range of sports classes should you be looking for an even wider choice.

Places to Socialise

Community spirit is alive and well in Doune with a range of events throughout the year, such as the Gala Day and the Christmas Fayre, to enjoy with your neighbours.

The village is also home to a few lovely eateries so if you’re looking to catch up with friends over a delicious meal, or even coffee and cake then there are great options on your doorstep.

Places to Discover

Doune is a treasure trove of history and charm making it a popular tourist stop. From the famous 15th century Doune Castle that many will recognise from Monty Python, Game of Thrones and Outlander, to the site of a Roman Fort that can be found in the castle grounds, there is plenty for history lovers to enjoy.

The quaint village offers an eclectic mix of unique, independent retailers from hairdressers and cafes to homewares and flowers, so there’s plenty for locals and visitors alike.

A few miles south of Doune you’ll find Blair Drummond Safari Park, Scotland’s only safari, for a fantastic family day out. Briarlands Farm also offers lots of outdoor fun, especially for younger children, with animals, go karts, jumping pillows and strawberry picking in the summer.

Places to Roam

Doune has plenty of walks and outdoor spaces to choose from. Whether you’re looking for a picturesque wander along the banks of the River Teith or something more strenuous in the hills and mountains of the southern Highlands, you’ll find something to enjoy. Doune is also within easy reach of the Trossachs National Park.

In the heart of the village is Doune Ponds Nature Reserve, a beautiful spot which offers 40 acres of woodland and water accessible to everyone, including those with mobility issues. Cared for by dedicated community volunteers, Doune Ponds was recognised by the Scotland’s Finest Woods Awards in 2023 winning the Small Community Woodland category.

Places to Learn

For little learners, Doune Nursery sits in the grounds of Doune Primary School. When the time comes to move on to secondary education, young people can attend McLaren High School in Callendar. There are also independent education options in Bridge of Allan in the form of Fairview International School.

For those looking to pursue further or higher education, Stirling University can be found in Bridge of Allan and the universities in Glasgow, Dundee or Edinburgh can be accessed by train from nearby Dunblane. Forth Valley College also has a campus in Stirling.

Getting Around

Doune is served by a good bus network allowing residents to travel to neighbouring towns, Stirling and further afield. The nearest train station can be found in Dunblane and provides access to both Glasgow and Edinburgh within an hour. Doune is also easily accessible by road sitting just off the A9 motorway making this location a good option for commuters.
